If you have ever spent hours on a project only for it to flop you know something all artists, new and old alike, know too well, something I like to call “Pushing Buttons”. For an example, click on the button below.
Since nothing happened, you probably felt a bit disappointed, right? Well, that’s the effect of “Pushing Buttons”. You work hard in order to create what is a beautiful “button” in your head, maybe even putting hours or days into it, but when it comes out the “button” just doesn’t work like you want. So you try again, maybe switching up the blueprint or getting rid of the more complicated bits and when you push it again…

Through all these disappointments you are finding what you do and don’t like when creating art. This leads you to find what medium you prefer, what subject matter you like drawing, what you’re good at, what you want to change, and so much more. All of these things combined lead you to improving your art and remaining consistent with/finding your art style. However, in the meantime, if those leftover buttons are making you mad but you can’t find it in your heart to destroy them, make a collage. It’s a simple exercise that doesn’t have any real rules and is just plain fun. As an example, I took an hour study I wasn’t terribly proud of and made something new of it. You can see it below along with a video on collage tips.

So, in short, don’t give up and
